The Alcoholics Anonymous Affiliation Scale (AAAS)

Instrument Description:

Research has shown that current AA affiliation is a robust predictor of problems, resources, prior treatment utilisation, and prior involvement in other self-help organisations at intake (Humphreys, 1998). The Alcoholics Anonymous Affiliation Scale (AAAS) is a nine-item scale covering a range of AA experiences. This scale is internally consistent across diverse demographic groups, multiple health services settings, and treated and untreated populations (Humphreys, 1998). The AA affiliation scale has multiple potential applications in clinical settings. By using the norms established in a large, diverse, representative sample of treatment and non-treatment seeking individuals, program managers can assess their patients' involvement in AA relative to patients in other programs of the same type. The normative data can also be used as a benchmark for patient involvement in AA. This instrument is also available in Swedish.
